“The governor’s budget would be a huge step backward in addressing child poverty in Vermont,” state senator Doug Racine, D-Chittenden, told the Messenger Tuesday. Racine co-chairs the Vermont Child Poverty Council. The council was created by the Vermont Legislature in 2007 and charged with finding ways to halve childhood poverty in Vermont by 2017. The council, which met with Vermonters in every county, released its report at the end of January. read more |

Sen. Doug Racine said Monday he will run for governor in two years. Racine, a Democrat and former lieutenant governor from Chittenden County, ran for the top job in 2002, losing by a very narrow margin to current Gov. James Douglas. "I have been talking with folks about it, I have been thinking about it for quite a while," Racine said. "I am just not going to play the game, the usual game … I am just going to say it and feel good about it." Racine added that the actual campaign will not begin until 2010, and he is currently concentrating on his work in the Senate, where he has been chairman of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee. read more |

One of the interesting tidbits from Vermont's election results is this: Popular Democratic Senator Doug Racine beat popular incumbent Republican Jim Douglas in Vermont's most populous county (Chittenden County, the only place the two of them were both on the ballot). Racine received about 44,000 votes in unofficial results, whereas Douglas received about 42,000 votes. read more |
